Anywhere Direct Care Pty Ltd

When you get your NDIS plan, one of the first questions is how your funding will be managed. It sounds technical, but it really comes down to one thing: who pays your providers, and which providers you’re allowed to use. There are three options, and you can mix them in the same plan.

NDIA-managed (agency-managed)

The NDIA pays your providers directly from your plan. You don’t handle invoices or payments.

  • Good for: people who want the least paperwork.
  • Keep in mind: you can only use registered NDIS providers.

Plan-managed

A plan manager pays your invoices for you and keeps track of your budget. The cost of a plan manager is funded separately in your plan, so it doesn’t come out of your support budget.

  • Good for: people who want more choice without doing the bookkeeping.
  • Keep in mind: you can use both registered and unregistered providers.

Self-managed

You (or someone you trust, like a family member) receive the funding and pay providers yourself. You keep records and receipts.

  • Good for: people who want the most control and flexibility.
  • Keep in mind: it takes more time and organisation.

How do I know which one I have?

Your plan shows how each part of your funding is managed. If you’re not sure, check your plan in the my NDIS portal or ask your Local Area Coordinator, support coordinator or the NDIA. You can also ask to change how your plan is managed at your next plan review, or sooner if your situation changes.

Which one is best?

There’s no right answer. It depends on how much choice you want, how much time you have for paperwork and how comfortable you feel managing money. Plenty of people start with one option and switch later.
