For many families in Sydney, Arabic is the language of home. It’s the language you think in, the one you use when you’re tired or worried, and the one your parents or grandparents feel most comfortable in. So when it comes to NDIS support, having a support worker who speaks Arabic isn’t a small extra. It can change the whole experience.

Why support in your own language matters

  • You can say exactly what you need. Personal care, health and daily routines are private things. It’s much easier to explain them in the language you know best.
  • Fewer misunderstandings. Instructions about medication, appointments or safety are clearer when nothing gets lost in translation.
  • Family stays in the loop. Parents, partners and carers who are more comfortable in Arabic can talk directly with the support worker.
  • Respect for culture and faith. A worker who shares or understands your background is more likely to understand things like food, prayer times, modesty and family roles without you having to explain.
  • Trust builds faster. Feeling understood is the start of a good working relationship.

Can I ask for an Arabic-speaking support worker?

Yes. The NDIS is built around choice and control, which means you can tell your provider what matters to you in a support worker, including language and culture. Just say so at the start. A good provider will do their best to match you with the right person.

What if I need an interpreter for NDIS meetings?

If you need help talking with the NDIS itself, you can call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450 and ask them to connect you to the NDIS on 1800 800 110. You can also ask for an interpreter at your planning meeting.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Do you have support workers who speak Arabic?
  • Can I meet my support worker before we start?
  • Will I see the same worker most of the time?
  • Can my family contact the team in Arabic?
  • Are your workers NDIS screened and police checked?
