Choosing an NDIS provider is one of the most important decisions you’ll make with your plan. The right provider makes everyday life easier. The wrong one can mean missed shifts, changing faces and a lot of stress. If you’re looking for support in Sydney, this checklist will help you compare providers and ask the right questions.

1. Check that they’re a registered NDIS provider

Registered providers have been checked by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and must meet the NDIS Practice Standards. If your plan is NDIA-managed (also called agency-managed), you can only use registered providers. You can ask any provider for their registration number and look them up on the NDIS Commission’s provider register.

2. Ask who will actually turn up

Consistency matters. Seeing the same support worker each week means they learn your routine, your preferences and the little things that make a big difference. Good questions to ask:

  • Will I have the same support worker most of the time?
  • What happens if my worker is sick or on leave?
  • Can I meet my support worker before we start?

3. Make sure workers are screened and trained

Every worker should have an NDIS Worker Screening Check. Many providers also require a police check, first aid and relevant qualifications such as a Certificate III in Individual Support or Community Services. It’s fine to ask what training their staff have.

4. Look for flexibility that fits your life

Your support should fit around you, not the other way round. Ask whether they can do early mornings, evenings or weekends, and how much notice you need to give to change a shift.

5. Ask about language and culture

Sydney is one of the most diverse cities in the world. If you or your family are more comfortable in a language other than English, or you’d like a worker who understands your culture, say so early. A good provider will try to match you with the right person.

6. Understand the costs before you start

NDIS providers charge according to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Ask for a clear service agreement that explains rates, cancellation rules and how invoices work. There should be no surprises.

7. Notice how they communicate

The way a provider treats you before you sign up is a good sign of how they’ll treat you after. Do they call back when they say they will? Do they explain things in plain English? Do they listen to what you want, rather than telling you what you need?

A quick checklist to keep handy

  • Registered with the NDIS Commission
  • Consistent support workers
  • Screened, checked and trained staff
  • Flexible days and times
  • Support in your language where possible
