Personal care is one of the most common supports people use under the NDIS. In the NDIS it’s called Assistance with Daily Personal Activities, and it’s there to help with the everyday tasks that have become hard to do on your own. Here’s what it can include and how to get started.
What personal care can help with
Every plan is different, but personal care support often includes:
- Showering, bathing and personal hygiene
- Getting dressed and ready for the day
- Toileting and continence support
- Grooming, like hair care and shaving
- Moving around the home, and getting in and out of bed or a chair
- Help at mealtimes
- Reminders to take medication (non-clinical)
Who is it for?
Personal care is for NDIS participants who need a hand with daily activities because of their disability. It can be a few hours a week or support every day, depending on your needs and what’s funded in your plan. It’s usually funded from the Core Supports part of your plan.
What good personal care looks like
Personal care is, well, personal. The right support worker makes you feel comfortable and respected, not rushed. Things to expect from a good provider:
- The same support worker where possible, so you’re not explaining yourself to someone new each week
- Respect for your privacy, your home and your routine
- Encouragement to do the parts you can do yourself
- Times that suit you, including early mornings if that’s when you need help
How to get started
- Check your plan. Look for Core Supports funding, or ask your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator.
- Get in touch with a provider. Tell them what help you need and when.
- Meet and plan. A good provider will meet you first, learn how you like things done and agree on a schedule with you.
- Start and review. Your support begins, and you check in regularly to make sure it’s working.
